About Herb

Herbert D. Friedman, Esq. is an attorney specializing in adoption and reproduction law, including donor egg and surrogacy. He is a highly regarded and nationally known adoption lawyer with more than 30 years' experience in this area. He has helped Massachusetts families adopt over 1,000 children throughout the United States and internationally. His oldest son is adopted from Latin America. He has represented prospective adoptive families who reside both within the United States and elsewhere, in connection with Massachusetts adoption situations and procedures. He also represents intended parents, egg donors, sperm donors, gestational carriers, and donors of cryopreserved embryos, whom he advises on assisted reproduction issues. For example, he drafts or reviews applicable agreements, including insurance contracts and policies, and petitions the court for pre-birth orders for the intended parents, where applicable. In addition, he is fluent in Spanish.

Herb received his B. A. from Cornell University, his Ph.D. in Management/Political Science from M.I.T., and his J. D. from Harvard Law School. He has a background in civil litigation practice and is a sole legal practitioner as well as Of Counsel to Rudolph Friedmann, LLP, a a Boston firm of approximately 20 attorneys that provides excellent legal representation in a wide variety of civil, estate planning, and business matters. He uses his background as a trial attorney to guide his clients through the complexities of the adoption or assisted reproductive technology (ART) process. His goal is to provide competent, compassionate, and comprehensive legal representation so that his clients become educated consumers, and are successful in accomplishing their goals.

Herb is a founding Fellow and board member of the American Academy of Adoption Attorneys (AAAA) as well as a founding Fellow of the American Academy Of Assisted Reproductive Technology Attorneys (AAARTA). He has been active in adoption issues both in Massachusetts and nationally. He is the author of a chapter entitled "Adoption Representation and Litigation" in the book Adoption and Reproductive Technology Law in Massachusetts (MCLE 2000), as well as other articles. He was a presenter at the 2008 Annual Conference of the Association of Administrators of The Interstate Compact on The Placement of Children, whose members are the officials in each state legally authorized to approve interstate adoption placements. In September, 2008, he received an Angel in Adoption award from the Congressional Coalition Adoption Institute, Washington, D.C. to celebrate his contribution to the lives of children through adoption.

Since 2010 he has been president of Adoption Community of New England, Inc. (ACONE), which for over forty years has advocated for and provided educational opportunities to all members of the adoption community.
